As the summer season approaches, it is important for families to be aware of the dangers that the summer months can bring. Summer is known for increased traveling, especially by vehicle.

“A lot of people go on vacation during the summer months and the statistics say that most people tend to drive,” said Staff Sgt. Brandon Ahuna, 81st Operation Support Flight air traffic controller and unit safety representative. “Planning ahead for trips, maintaining your car properly, driving safe and maintaining your situational awareness can prevent a car accident.”

James O’Hara, 81st Training Wing occupational safety specialist, said making sure people are safe doing what they want to do is what the Safety Office is here for.

“Safety is a mindset,” said O’Hara. “I believe many people put safety second and there are a lot of things people don’t really consider. Our number one job is mishap prevention. We want to keep military members and civilians safe, whether they’re driving, walking or doing their job on base.”

Hurricane Season and the Fourth of July holiday are also important to consider during the summer months.

“Last year we had one of the most active hurricane seasons,” said Ahuna. “Staying aware and being prepared is important in keeping everyone safe.”
