MAJOR GENERAL DONALD A. RIGG Major General Donald A. Rigg is deputy commander, 6th Allied Tactical Air Force, Izmir, Turkey. In peacetime, SIXATAF provides full-time air defense of Turkey and assures assigned forces are combat ready through tactical evaluations, exercises, logistics and communications support. During wartime, SIXATAF assumes operational control of two Turkish Tactical Air Forces and NATO-assigned reinforcements. General Rigg was born March 7, 1934, in Portland, Ore., where he graduated from Grant High School in 1952. He earned bachelor of arts and bachelor of science in general science degrees from Oregon State University. The general also has master's degrees in business administration, political science and management. He completed Squadron Officer School in 1966, Air Command and Staff College in 1970, and the Air War College in 1978, all in residence. The general was commissioned as a second lieutenant through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program at Oregon State in June 1956 and entered active duty in February 1958. Upon completion of undergraduate navigator training and navigator-bombardier training, he was assigned to the 10th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing, Royal Air Force Station Alconbury, England, and Toul-Rosieres Air Base, France. In June 1963 General Rigg returned to the United States and attended undergraduate pilot training at Williams Air Force Base, Ariz., where he remained as an instructor pilot. From April 1966 to July 1969 he was an instructor pilot and flight examiner in the pilot instructor training course at both Randolph and Perrin Air Force bases, Texas. After completing Air Command and Staff College, and F-4 transition training at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz., the general was assigned to Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, as an F-4D/E instructor pilot, squadron assistant operations officer, and wing chief of operations and training. He returned from Southeast Asia in June 1972 and was assigned as an operations staff officer in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Plans, Headquarters Air Training Command, Randolph Air Force Base. In May 1973 he transferred to the Air Force Military Personnel Center, also on Randolph, as chief of rated officer career development. He then served as deputy chief of the Rated Officer Career Management Branch. General Rigg assumed command of Detachment 2, 1400th Military Airlift Squadron, Military Airlift Command, also at Randolph, in May 1976. Upon graduation from the Air War College in July 1978, General Rigg returned to Air Training Command headquarters as chief of the Base Support Division, and later was chief of the Operations, Training, Education and Readiness Division for the Air Training Command inspector general. He served as Randolph base commander from July 1980 to March 1982, and subsequently became commander of the 71st Flying Training Wing, Vance Air Force Base, Okla. After completing Portuguese language training in Washington, D.C., General Rigg was assigned to Lajes Field, Azores, in May 1984 as commander of the U.S. Forces, Azores, and commander of the 1605th Military Airlift Support Wing. From July 1986 to May 1987 he was director of aerospace safety, Headquarters Air Force Inspection and Safety Center, Norton Air Force Base, Calif. He then became deputy inspector general of the U.S. Air Force, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force, Washington, D.C. The general returned to Randolph in June 1988 and became deputy chief of staff for technical training, Headquarters Air Training Command. He assumed his present duties in November 1989. The general is a command pilot with more than 5,500 flying hours, including 128 combat missions in Southeast Asia. His military awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross with oak leaf cluster, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air Medal with eight oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, and Portuguese Medal of Military Merit, First Class. He was promoted to major general May 1, 1988, with same date of rank. (Current as of January 1990)
