JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. -- As we quickly move through these Critical Days of Summer, the next stop is the 244th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The Fourth of July weekend is a time for reflection and celebration. Traditionally, this holiday weekend conjures up visions of traditional summer events such as parades, picnics and fireworks. Even with the limitations of COVID-19, I encourage you to think of personal safety and risk management during your celebrations.
The Air Force averages 26 mishaps a year during the Independence Day Weekend. Of those mishaps, 57% are due to off-duty activities involving sports and recreation (i.e. water sports, motorsports and other high-risk activities), 33% involve fires started by grilling and fireworks, and 10% involve motor vehicles.
The Air Force lost 4 members in the past five years during the fourth of July weekend. Each mishap involved alcohol consumption as a contributing factor. Have fun and celebrate this weekend safely, but be sure to make time for risk management and to have a plan.
Have a safe and happy Fourth of July Weekend!
