HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – As warmer weather arrives in New England, safety officials here remind military personnel of the requirements to ride a motorcycle on the installation.
Active duty motorcycle riders are required to make contact with a unit motorcycle safety representative and be entered into the Air Force Motorcycle Unit Safety Tracking Tool. Documentation of a safety briefing in MUSTT is required for riders within 30 days of arrival at Hanscom or upon becoming a motorcycle rider.
“Military riders are also required to attend an approved motorcycle-training course or obtain their license to ride in accordance with state laws,” said Shaun Bassett, 66th Air Base Group occupational safety manager.

Airmen who attend the basic course are required to complete intermediate training between 60 days and one year after.
Some military members may be eligible for reimbursement for the advanced rider course. The beginner course is not currently reimbursable for Hanscom-connected active duty personnel.
Safety officials recently held a virtual pre-season safety briefing for Hanscom riders. The safety inspection and mentorship ride, which are voluntary, will take place May 4, with an inclement weather date of May 6.
“The upcoming motorcycle mentorship event will aid in mitigating risks though rider education, pre-ride motorcycle safety inspections and group mentorship rides,” said Master Sgt. Jennifer Deinhart, a Hanscom motorcycle mentor.
According to AFI 91-207 and Department of Defense Instruction 6055.04, all military and civilian motorcycle operators, and their passengers, must wear proper protective clothing while operating on a military installation.
