GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- National Fire Prevention Week will be here soon! Col. Andres Nazario, 17th Training Wing commander, will sign the Goodfellow FPW proclamation on October 2, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. Any and all Goodfellow personnel are invited to the event, which will take place at the Wing Flagpole in front of the Norma Brown building.
“Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” is the slogan for the 2019 Fire Prevention Week Campaign. In 2016 the U.S. experienced an estimated 364,000 fires resulting in 2,775 deaths, 11,025 injuries and nearly $6 billion in damages. Many fire-related injuries and deaths could be prevented if families took a serious look at home safety and fire prevention. Inspector Billy Clemons stated, “Having an evacuation plan is the single most important means for families to survive a residential fire.”
A simple plan, coupled with working smoke alarms, significantly increases a family’s chances of surviving a catastrophic fire.
Fire Prevention Week offers GAFB firefighters an excellent opportunity to remind our residents about fire prevention and life safety awareness here at work and home.
During NFPW, firefighters will host daily events designed to enhance fire and life safety awareness on the installation. One fan favorite, the fire competition muster, treats teams of four to an obstacle course designed to simulate firefighting techniques such as the hose roll and patient litter carry. The team with the best time will take home the coveted firefighter trophy and the $100 prize!
