School bus safety on JBLE

JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. – Drivers on JBLE must adhere to Virginia school bus safety laws to in order to protect the children of the community.

Virginia State code 46.2-859 Passing a Stopped School bus states:

• Drivers must stop for all stopped school buses with flashing red lights and an extended stop sign when approaching from any direction on a public or private road. 

• Drivers must stop and remain stopped until all lights stop flashing, children are clear and the bus moves again. 

• Drivers must stop if traveling in the opposite direction on a multi-lane roadway without a median or barrier dividing the road and the bus is on the opposite side of the road.

• Drivers do not have to stop if traveling in the opposite direction on a roadway with a median or barrier dividing the road and the bus is on the opposite side of the median or barrier.

• Drivers must stop if the bus is loading or unloading children and the signals are not on.

Drivers caught illegally passing a school bus face reckless driving charges, up to 12 months in jail and/or a fine of up to $2,500. Authorities may also suspend the driver’s license or impound their vehicle.
