HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – Autumn in New England can bring with it many safety-related challenges for newcomers or lifelong residents.
Hanscom safety officials encourage the community to take extra precautions as temperatures drop, leaves begin to fall and daylight hours shorten.
“Motorists are reminded to watch for pedestrians and children, especially as more activities occur during non-daylight hours,” said Tech. Sgt. Alexander Stavrinos, 66th Air Base Group noncommissioned officer in charge of occupational safety and health.
In addition to fewer daylight hours, solar glare is a hazard for motorists this time of year. Hartwell Avenue and Route 2A, that lead to the entry control points for the installation, can be particularly dangerous this time of year, said Stavrinos.
Safety officials highlighted that personnel should take the necessary steps to travel safely by preparing vehicles for colder weather.
“We recommend replacing old, worn windshield wipers, and conducting other vehicle-related safety checks,” said Stavrinos.
Master Sgt. Henrie Young, 66 ABG occupational safety superintendent, recommends those trick-or-treating this Halloween should wear reflective material, carry glow sticks and flashlights and walk in well-lit areas. .
“Drivers should also be extra careful this Halloween and watch for children crossing the roads,” said Young. “Staying aware of our surroundings is a great way to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience.”
Members of the 66th Security Forces Squadron will once again operate Pumpkin Patrol to keep children safe in base housing.
Another safety concern is leaves. The changing colors on the trees make for an enjoyable drive, but those leaves, especially when wet, can be a hazard for motorists. They can cause vehicles to skid during steering or braking..
According to officials, riding a motorcycle during this time of the year also comes with its own set of challenges.
“Late season motorcyclists are highly advised to be extra vigilant and to take extra precautions while riding,” said Stavrinos.
