The fire department at Hill AFB kicked off Fire Prevention Week with a proclamation signing on Sept. 28 by Col. Jeffrey Holland, 75th Air Base Wing commander.

Observed annually in October, this year’s Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 8-14 with fire departments across the nation using the campaign to connect with the public through educational events and school visits to promote fire safety.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention,” works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe when cooking.

This year’s campaign includes the following recommendations from the Fire Prevention Proclamation:

  • Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove.
  • Always keep a lid nearby when cooking.
  • Keep a three-foot kid-free zone around the stove, oven and hot appliances.
  • Watch what you heat.
  • Set a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
  • Test smoke detectors and replace batteries every 6 months.

During the month, the fire prevention section at Hill AFB will participate in activities to celebrate the week.

The official observance began in 1925 when President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance.
