BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. -- Get in, the water is fine, and we’ve finally made it to 101 Critical Days of Summertime!
Memorial Day and Labor Day mark the beginning and end of 101 Critical Days of Summertime; a period when all Airmen are encouraged to take extra precautions in daily activities to prevent dangerous and potentially deadly accidents.
In 2021, the National Safety Council reported an extreme increase in motor vehicle, drowning, and excessive heat exposure fatalities between June and August, resulting in 931 preventable deaths.
Additionally, in the summer of 2023, the Department of the Air Force reported 190 motor vehicle accidents and 228 sports and recreation mishaps, resulting in 20 lives lost. Of these accidents, 85% took place off duty.
Every summer does not have to reflect these statistics. Thankfully, 307th Bomb Wing Safety has compiled this list of preventative practices so that you and your family can be safe this summer.
- If you’re planning on consuming any alcoholic beverages, be sure to have a designated driver. If your plans fall through, make sure you have a second designated driver or call a transportation service.

- Get a fix on "3 and 6!" This is typically the hottest and most dangerous time to work and play in the local area, even with proper hydration. The Dixie Alley is known for its hot and intense temperatures. Acclimation to the climate is critical to new families unaccustomed to the area.
- Having fun in the sun? Make your family’s safety is number one! When near a large body of water, always have a responsible adult present to keep an eye on children and adults.
- The only "fireworks" permitted in the skies above Barksdale are airplanes. Sparklers, bottle rockets, roman candles, M-80s, black cats, cherry bombs, etc., should not be ignited on base property! When you're lighting up the sky in an approved location, outside of Barksdale AFB, read the packaging on your fireworks thoroughly and follow the instructions closely to avoid accidents.
- Weather warnings (i.e., tornadoes, floods, etc.) are not false alarms, recommendations, or suggestions, they are life savers! Take all weather warnings/announcements very seriously!
- Traveling on vacation and going far? Regular breaks are important for you and your passenger's health. Be sure to stretch often, take a walk, and avoid sitting for extended periods.
