With bright skies overhead and bikes of all sizes rolling through, Kirtland’s annual Bike Safety Day brought smiles, safety education, and a few surprises to families across base April 18.

Hosted by the 377th Air Base Wing Safety Office, the event combined hands-on activities and interactive demonstrations to promote safe cycling habits for riders of all ages. Team Kirtland’s riders got the chance to choose a free bike helmet, ensuring that every young rider left better protected.

Bikers go to test their skills on a riding course designed to teach balance, control, and awareness.

“This event is all about education through fun,” said Steve Dobbs, 377th Air Base Wing Safety and Occupational Health Specialist. “We want our community to enjoy biking while staying safe every time they hit the road or trail.”

Partners from across the base and the local community joined forces to make the day a success. Kirtland Fire & Emergency Services, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team attended the event with vehicles to show off to the families. Representatives from the New Mexico Department of Transportation shared tips and materials about safe riding practices, and the 377th Medical Group was on-site to support with health and safety information.

In addition to education, the day had plenty of fun in store. The Kirtland Chapel provided a free lunch for attendees, and of the 377th Force Support Squadron raffled off free brand-new bikes to four excited winners.

“I really like to ride bikes!” said Aria Woodford, 5-year-old bike raffle winner. “I am excited! My favorite part is the tassels!”

Bike maintenance was provided on-site to check tire checks, helping riders leave ready to roll.

This year’s event reinforced the importance of community, safety, and a little bit of fun. Organizers hope the excitement carries on as Kirtland families gear up for the spring and summer biking season.
