Air Force Safety Center gets new acronym; name and mission remain unchanged Published March 9, 2012 By Darlene Cowsert Air Force Safety Center KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- The Air Force Safety Center acronym changed on Feb. 1 to AFSEC to accommodate the planned standup of the Air Force Sustainment Center, which will be designated as AFSC. Recipients of safety center products or correspondence bearing the new acronym may be confused by the change initially, but officials emphasize that the name and the mission of the safety center remain the same. "We are still the Air Force Safety Center and our mission continues to be preventing mishaps and preserving combat capability," said Maj. Gen. Greg Feest, Air Force chief of safety. Internally, the change will be reflected in signature blocks, written references to office symbols and all new print products and correspondence. Changes will not be made to existing products, officials said. The new Air Force Sustainment Center is part of Air Force Materiel Command's reorganization efforts to standardize processes to operate more effectively and efficiently. The planned center will be one of five mission-area centers and will be located at Tinker AFB, Okla. A field operating agency, the Air Force Safety Center develops policy, provides guidance, education, training and oversight of the Air Force safety and nuclear surety program to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of safety education and training, risk management and mishap prevention.
