Fall Protection Focus weeks end; but keep the focus Published July 1, 2015 By Lisa Gonzales Air Force Safety Center Public Affairs KIRTLAND AFB, N.M -- Fall Protection Focus weeks, May 4-15, have ended, but Airmen are encouraged to remain aware that falls are among the most common causes of serious work-related injuries or deaths. The Air Force partnered again this year with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to convey the risks involved in not wearing proper personal protective equipment or following written guidance. Major commands contributed to the success of the Fall Protection Focus with a variety of events including demonstrations, local inspections and safety down days. In support of this year's effort, Air Force ground safety professionals distributed articles, videos and documents worldwide, reminding more than 1.5M active duty, Guard, Reserve, civilians, and family members of the dangers of preventable falls. "Keeping Airmen alive and safe is our mission here at the Air Force Safety Center and we don't take their safety for granted; that is why we strive to give them all the tools they need to make informed decisions," said Bill Parsons, Air Force chief of ground safety. "Preventable falls are inexcusable. We need everyone to continue to do all we can to protect ourselves and each other." According to safety professionals, most slips, trips and falls, on and off duty are preventable. Use of correct personal protective equipment in work areas and during leisure activities reduces unnecessary risk. Supervisors should continue to stress the importance of using personal protective gear and remind all Airmen to follow fall protection guidance.
