WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio -- This weekend, the Air Force family’s military and civilian members will spend some well-deserved time away from their duty sections.
As we enjoy Labor Day festivities, let’s remember to look out for one another and keep the major safety themes we have practiced foremost in our minds:
Traffic safety
- Motorcycle and auto mishaps are the No. 1 killer of Air Force personnel. Bicycles count as vehicles, too.
- Plan your travel and maintain situational awareness. Use occupant restraints or personal-protective equipment — every time.
- Fatigue or alcohol use must not be allowed to erode your ability to perform. If you drink or find yourself in a fatigued state, don’t drive.
In the water
- Don’t swim alone or when drinking. Only dive if you know the water’s depth. Never exceed your abilities.
- Pay particular attention to lightning at all times but especially on the water, when YOU are the highest object. On a boat, personal flotation devices are a must.
Grilling safety
- Gasoline must never be substituted for charcoal lighter. Ensure the grill is at least 10 feet away from any flammable structure.
- The grill should also be clear of areas where children and pets could accidentally come in contact with it and burn themselves, or knock the grill over.
- Although most modern grills employ a “hands-off” method of cooking, you should never leave it unattended. Always ensure the coals are completely cool before disposing of them.
Risk management
- Managing risk is a philosophy that applies on and off duty. Once a hazard has been identified, consider the likelihood of a mishap and the severity if it does occur.
- Accept no unnecessary risk. Consider all the ways risk can be controlled and select the best option.
- Follow the above guidance and make this Labor Day weekend the safest ever.
