Senior Safety Advisory Council meets to exchange safety ideas

KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. --  Members of the Air Force Senior Safety Advisory Council met Nov. 5 - 6 with Maj. Gen. Kurt F. Neubauer, Air Force chief of safety, to exchange ideas for current and future safety programs.

"Safety is the connective tissue that pulls together all our efforts across all disciplines," said Neubauer, as he relayed the importance of every Airman's commitment to mishap reduction.

Discussions included updates on the Air Force Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP), Military Flight Operations Quality Assurance (MFOQA) and Line Operations Safety Audit (LOSA) which are recognized not only in the Air Force, but throughout the commercial flying industry as reliable approaches to safety without the mishap.

Another key topic was the Air Force Safety Automated System (AFSAS), a web-based system which continues to mature into one of the most capable reporting and analysis tools in the Department of Defense, saving the entire safety community time, energy and effort in the reporting and analysis processes.

Motorcycle safety training continued to be an important ground safety issue. Air Force Instruction 91-207, The U.S. Air Force Traffic Safety Program, was recently updated to align with Department of Defense Instruction 6055.04, DoD Traffic Safety Program, and council members addressed training requirements for their specific major commands. Members also discussed potential changes to the DOD motorcycle safety requirements.

Other topics the council discussed during the two-day session included policies, manpower, human factors, training, safety investigation boards and the safeguard of privileged information.
